WHISKY INVESTMENTS GAIN MOMENTUM

Here at Grainmash, we’re particularly fed up with the stupid greedy mindless games played between bankers. They’ve disappeared so far into their screens and trading software that they have forgotten about the real world. If the FSA and governments cannot create checks and balances to stop people like Madoff, or stop “institutionalised insider dealing” (Maddoff scandal) then we are all for a boycott of equities and a reinvestment in something more transparent. Namely, whisky!

As private equity and art markets have fallen in this credit crunch, many more people have pursued whisky as a new investment.  We’ve been banging on about it for a while, and to be fair, a while before the latest banking and stock market nonsense hit the press pages. The London Times, in August 2009, reported on the trend.

They published a quick article which highlighted how Whyte & Mackay have reported a significant increase in enquiries into buying whisky as an investment. Indeed, none other than Charles Curtis, Head of North American wine sales for auctioneer Christie’s, explained further:

“The whisky market is new and developing. It is similar to where the wine market was 20 years ago. People have realised that whisky is not correlated with the main markets and can produce positive results as other investments are producing negative returns.”

Yes indeed Grain Mashers, evidence shows whisky has proven to be one of the best investments in recent times! For example, an investment in premium single malt whisky in 2000 increased in value by 290% where a fine wine increased only by 210%.

The value of rare whiskies is increasing also due to decreasing availability as director of Whisky Exchange, Sukhinder Singh, noted:

“Ten years ago, the majority [of rare malts] were going to collectors. Today, the majority are being drunk.”  Yes, Sukhinder, and we hope you’re enjoying your fair share. When Grainmash met Sukhinder, and asked him what his favourite whisky was, he replied “the last one I had!”
