THE GLENROTHES 1975

The Glenrothesrd bottle to find. Having won Platinum medals, been given 98% ratings, we seem to be talking about one of the very finest Speyside Single Malts ever, a Scotch of staggering reputation, a Vintage Malt.  There were only 3000 bottles produced. The general trade price, if you can find this anywhere, appears to run between the 400-600 US dollar range. The web price is currently £430.00 per bottle, making this one of the best whisky investments i have found.

As only one of the British online stores we frequent seem to have a bottle for sale (December 2008), and nor did The Glenrothes distillery itself, this seemed like the best “whisky investment” we have found so far. Sure, the price is already high, but so is the quality, and the quantity is strictly controlled.  Even if more barrels are “discovered”, Grainmash thinks the original 2006 bottling will simply rise in price, and Glenrothes would surely not be so foolish as to sell any new 1975 barrels for less than they are worth. They would surely get “special treatment” of some description.

So, having decided that Glenrothes 1975 was the best whisky to invest in, and the best whisky investment sourced in November 2008 (the month the banks were found to have been truly foolish with money) we tracked down 3 bottles from around the world, and had them delivered to the Grainmash HQ.

Grainmash is also sitting on another rather special bottle of Glenrothes,  though this is not a distillery bottling. It is the Duncan Taylor Cask Strength Single Malt, distilled at Glenrothes in November 1968, bottled in its 40th year in February 2008 aged 39 years. Bottle number 93/99, from cask number 13498 (for the trainspotters amongst us).

So, GrainMash is now sitting on 2 bottles from the 2006 bottling, numbers 42 and 69, are sitting here growing in value. If someone would like to buy Glenrothes 1975 for their collection, for anyone who wants to help us hedge this investment, and has 600 quid spare, feel free to drop me a line.  The third bottle has yet to arrive, and should be delivered by our trusty courier “Mo” within the next few weeks.

Now, given that we have selected this as a whisky investment, and have not yet tasted this, we are currently unable to wax lyrical about it. The distillery tasking notes speak of rich fruit, citrus, hazelnut and vanilla.  For more information on The Glenrothes, click here to read our history about the distillery, or here to visit The Glenrothes Distillery website.
