Details

Dark and deeply sherried, this mature Speyside opens with strawberries and candied fruit before revealing aromatic herbs, seasoned oak and a generous touch of spice. The first fill sherry cask brings a dense sweetness and silky texture, while drier woody notes keep the fruit from becoming overly indulgent. The finish carries dried fruit, spice and old oak, giving this rare bottling a distinctly traditional character.

This Chieftain’s 1990 22 Year Old Cask 5164 is an exceptionally scarce single cask release, with only 555 bottles produced and distribution focused primarily on the Taiwanese market. It has now disappeared from conventional retail, leaving auctions as the principal route to market. Exact transactions for Cask 5164 remain scarce, but comparable Chieftain’s 1990 22 Year Old bottlings provide a useful benchmark, with secondary market values around £450 to £650 and closely related releases reaching approximately £500 to £610. Our view: the combination of 1990 vintage, 22 years of maturation, limited single cask supply and restricted original distribution gives it strong collector credentials. With so few bottles likely circulating in Europe, we would keep this one sealed.
