Karuizawa 17 Year Old

Karuizawa 17 Year Old

Details

Mature and unmistakably old school, this Karuizawa opens with baked apple, roasted nuts and dark chocolate before revealing leather, pepper and wisps of smoke. Seasoned oak brings a dry, almost antique quality, softened by subtle fruit sweetness and cocoa. The finish turns savoury with nuts, spice and smoky wood, giving this rare Japanese malt the deep, contemplative character for which old Karuizawa has become so sought after.

Invest | Historical CAGR: approximately +7% | Market outlook: Positive

Karuizawa 17 Year Old is an older official Mercian release containing a marriage of sherry matured, peated and unpeated Karuizawa whisky, with some spirit reportedly as old as 31 years. Unlike many bottles we have assessed, there is a strong auction trail: £440 in January 2016, £725 in 2019, £750 in 2020, around £820 in 2021, £580 in March 2025 and £900 in February 2026. Using the comparable £440 and £900 sales gives an indicative CAGR of approximately +7.3% over ten years, despite considerable volatility. Our view: definitely Invest. This is whisky from the original closed Karuizawa distillery, whose finite historic stocks have become some of the most collectible Japanese whisky in the world. Condition and original packaging matter considerably, but a complete example is one we would preserve.
