Dark and decadent, this Kavalan opens with black cherries, stewed berries and dried fruit before slipping into dark chocolate, roasted coffee and sticky caramel. The Port cask adds a lush, wine-soaked character, while orange peel and toasted oak sharpen the sweeter notes. Dense and velvety across the palate, it closes on espresso, cocoa and dark fruit, giving this unusual Kavalan an enticing after dinner character.

Kavalan SMWS Midnight Espresso is Cask 139.5, one of the earliest Kavalan casks ever selected by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Matured in a first fill Port barrique, only 181 bottles were produced, and SMWS itself described these early Kavalan releases as quickly becoming rare and sought after. The auction history, however, has changed dramatically. Two examples sold for £200 and £220 at Whisky Hammer in August 2019, and another reached £270 in February 2021. By February 2026, the same Cask 139.5 achieved only £80. Using £220 in 2019 against £80 in 2026 gives an indicative CAGR of approximately −14%, a total decline of around 64%. Our view: historically fascinating and genuinely scarce, but the market evidence currently favours drinking rather than investing.
