Details

Luscious and fruit forward, this Kavalan opens with ripe plums, blackberries and dark cherries, followed by raisins, caramel and bittersweet chocolate. The Port cask gives the whisky a jammy richness, while cinnamon, toasted nuts and seasoned oak provide contrast and structure. The finish moves towards dark berries, cocoa and gentle spice, creating an opulent Taiwanese single malt with impressive concentration and depth.

Kavalan Solist Port Cask at 57.8% exists across numerous individually numbered single casks, including releases dating from the mid 2010s through the early 2020s, so the strength alone does not identify one exact bottle. Whiskybase records examples such as O090629012A, O090714049A, O110328002A and O101008021A, several of which score around 88 to 90 points. Looking at the wider Solist Port Cask auction market, however, values have softened from the highs seen around 2019 to 2020, with more recent comparable Port Casks frequently selling around £80 to £120. This indicates an annualised decline of roughly 5% from the stronger market period. Our view: these remain excellent, genuinely limited single cask whiskies, but current secondary demand does not justify keeping a standard 57.8% Port Cask purely for appreciation. Unless your specific cask is an unusually early, highly rated or special market release, we would drink it.
