SMWS- A Dark Abyss of Bliss

Brooding and indulgent, this whisky plunges into heavy fruitcake, dates and dark treacle, joined by bitter orange marmalade and strong coffee. Chocolate malt and cocoa deepen the profile, while tobacco, liquorice and toasted oak introduce a darker, savoury streak. Coconut and charred spiced buns appear towards the close, leaving a captivating mix of burnt citrus, chocolate and aromatic spice that suits its dramatic name perfectly.

Drink | Historical CAGR: Not established | Market outlook: Limited

A Dark Abyss of Bliss is SMWS 107.22, a 9 Year Old GlenAllachie distilled on 4 April 2011 and released in 2021, with 585 bottles produced. It spent its first five years in an Oloroso butt before being transferred to a second fill toasted oak butt, making it a more unusual maturation than many SMWS releases. Whiskybase scores it around 85.8 from more than 60 ratings and currently records no retail availability. I searched specifically for Cask 107.22 across UK and international auction records and found an Australian Whisky Auctions appearance, but no accessible achieved price and no reliable sequence of hammer results from which to calculate CAGR. Our view: GlenAllachie's growing reputation helps, but 585 bottles is a relatively large SMWS outturn and there is currently no evidence of sustained secondary market demand. We would drink this one rather than hold it purely for appreciation.
