SMWS- Smoky, Salty and Malty

Details

Wildly coastal and packed with personality, this youthful Highlander combines dense peat smoke with lime zest, orange peel and a sharp pinch of sea salt. Blackberries and sourdough bring an unusual fruity, malty contrast, while samphire adds another splash of the sea. Salted caramel and strawberry soften the smoke before sandalwood, coconut and exotic incense take over the finish, creating a wonderfully eccentric dram that lives up to its name.

Smoky, Salty and Malty is SMWS 149.1, the Society’s first ever Ardnamurchan cask. Distilled on 14 September 2015 and bottled at five years old from a first fill Oloroso sherry butt, it produced 636 bottles. The market response was unusually strong for an SMWS release: a verified Just Whisky auction in April 2021 achieved £235, showing substantial collector demand almost immediately after release. Whisky Auctioneer also records later appearances, although its hammer prices are not publicly visible, so there is not enough transparent data to calculate a reliable CAGR. Our view: this is one to keep sealed. Being SMWS cask 149.1, the inaugural Society bottling from Ardnamurchan, gives it historical significance that later 149.x releases cannot replicate, while current scarcity and Ardnamurchan’s growing collector following strengthen the long term case.
