Details

Graceful and wonderfully evocative, this old Auchentoshan opens with apricot, pineapple and gooseberry alongside honey, lime and fragrant wild flowers. A subtle waxiness develops underneath, joined by sweet malt, mint and seasoned oak, with just a whisper of smoke adding intrigue. Creamy across the palate before turning pleasantly dry, it closes on bittersweet citrus, gentle spice and old oak, capturing the delicate fruitiness of Auchentoshan from another era.

Auchentoshan 1966 31 Year Old belongs to the highly collectible Official Distillery Archive series, comprising individual single hogsheads bottled around 1997. Auction history is unusually strong for a vintage Auchentoshan. Cask 1004 rose from £320 in 2013 to £700 in 2018 and £750 in 2020, while Cask 511 achieved £625 in 2016, £450 in 2021 and £600 in 2025. Another 1966 cask achieved £460 in 2019, while Cask 804 sold for £440 more recently. Taken together, comparable 1966 releases suggest long term annualised appreciation around 5%, despite considerable variation between individual casks. Our view: definitely one to preserve. A 1966 vintage, more than three decades of maturation, single cask provenance and increasingly scarce 1990s distillery bottling give it considerably stronger collector credentials than modern Auchentoshan releases.
