Vibrant and remarkably fresh for its age, this rare Balmenach is driven by juicy strawberries, redcurrants and orchard fruit, with grapefruit and rhubarb bringing a lively tartness. Beneath the fruit sit intriguing notes of old books, mint, roasted almonds and earthy herbs, giving it a wonderfully old fashioned complexity. Oily and powerful at cask strength, it finishes long with zesty citrus, malt, pistachio and lingering red berries. A fascinating old Speyside with an unusual balance of fruit, earthiness and maturity.

Balmenach 1973 23 Year Old is an early Adelphi bottling from Cask 9776, distilled in 1973 and bottled in 1996, only three years after Adelphi was established. It predates the 2006 rebranding to Adelphi Selection and is now exceptionally difficult to find, with Whiskybase recording no current retailers and Spirit Radar showing only three historic offers. Verified auction evidence is sparse but encouraging: a bottle sold for $225 in 2016 and another achieved $325 in 2021, a rise of roughly 44%. The whisky also carries a strong Whiskybase rating of 88.58. Our view: 1970s distillation, early Adelphi provenance and extremely limited availability make this a genuine collector bottle worth keeping sealed.
