Details

Beautifully mature and wonderfully expressive, this 28 year old Knockdhu layers mango, lychee and crisp green apple with vanilla fudge, roasted almonds and sweet malt. Delicate incense, white pepper and polished oak bring an intriguing old whisky character, while touches of coconut and tropical fruit keep it remarkably fresh. Rich and oily yet effortlessly elegant, it finishes with lingering fruit, gentle spice and a refined malty sweetness.

Shimmering Beauty of Butterfly Wings is SMWS 115.22, a 28 Year Old Knockdhu distilled in June 1992 and released in 2021 from a single refill ex bourbon barrel, with just 148 bottles produced. That makes it considerably more compelling than the typical younger SMWS release: it combines a 1992 vintage, substantial age and an exceptionally small surviving supply. It is also highly regarded, scoring 88.33 on Whiskybase from more than 50 ratings, while no current retailers are recorded there. A specialist listing has valued the bottle at £529, although this is an asking price rather than a verified auction result. With auction trading extremely thin, a credible CAGR cannot be calculated. Our view: this is one of the SMWS bottles worth preserving. Age, vintage and an outturn below 150 bottles give it genuine long term collector potential.
